Your social media presence reflects who you are as a person. When hiring managers receive your resume and take a look at yours, what does it communicate about you? If you’re not sure, or if it might be something negative, you need to clean up your profiles. This will ensure you’re always putting your best foot forward online. Here are some tips to help you get started.

Google yourself.

Since this is the first step a hiring manager will take, it’s important you do it too. You’ll want to know what comes up when you enter your name and hit the Search button. You might be surprised by what’s out there.

Check that your accounts are private.

You might have set up your Facebook account years ago without even considering whether to keep it private or not. Now, before you begin your job search, check and make sure all your profiles are set to private. While hiring managers can still access some information, it’s far more limited than if you have a public account.

Get rid of inappropriate photos or posts.

Maybe you had a bad day and went on a rant. Or you had a big night out and posted a photo that doesn’t show you in the best light. Now’s the time to go through your profiles and get rid of anything that a hiring manager will question.

Delete old accounts.

If you’re no longer on a certain site, like YouTube or Facebook, delete your account. You don’t want videos or content you posted a decade ago to impact your ability to get the job.

Create a LinkedIn profile.

If you don’t have a LinkedIn profile, now’s a good time to create one. If you do, check it and update it to ensure job titles, dates, and other information is as current as possible. Make sure you upload a professional-looking photo and add any information you think will be of interest to a hiring manager.

Also, follow industry-related or interesting people or companies. This will show the hiring manager that you’re motivated to learn and stay in the know. Don’t forget to post too, whether you’re sharing new job news, offering up your own insights, or writing articles.

Be more mindful going forward.

In the future, make sure you think before you post. That way, you won’t have to worry about whether a hiring manager is going to decide whether to extend an offer to you based on a social media post from years ago.
